FOREWORD What makes something grow? A seed: maybe water and sunshine. An idea: perhaps discussion or shared consensus. How about a song: maybe a single cord or some words that become a lyric that sticks in one’s head. How does a musical group come together? Perhaps locale, like-mindedness, or simply friendship. Roseland, Illinois. Not a hotbed for musical creation, and yet it happened. The 1970s were a fantastic time for music, for Rock 'n Roll, and for dreams. FM radio was breaking new ground, and so were many musicians with ideas and ambitions that needed to be expressed. The band Styx originated from friendships in the Roseland area. So, did M&R Rush. Marty and Roger, who met playing baseball in Roseland. Then came Carl, Paul, John, and Jeff, and M&R Rush was born. Styx became a worldwide phenomenon.
