All woods are not the same. Some woods hold a secret and the Whispering Wood is one of those woods.
Why? You might ask. Well, deep within the heart of the Whispering Wood, in a hidden place, where the air hums with the melody of magic, live some very special fairies.
They are a lot like any other fairies, not particularly large, slightly bigger than a mouse, with wings that shimmer like spider’s webs under the moon’s gentle glow.
They used to be known as the Fairies of the Whispering Wood but sadly they have a new name, The Eco-Fairies of The Whispering Wood and for a very good reason. These tiny fairies love their woodland home and spend their days keeping it clean and tidy.
Elder Willow is their leader, his beard is as wispy as the dawn mist and as white as dandelion fluff with eyes that hold the wisdom of centuries.
He has a cosy little house deep within the mighty Hollow Oak, their home, its entrance marked by a small wooden door, with a lantern above.
Hollow oak is so ginormous there is room in its many branches and hollows to house all the other fairies, in cosy little shelters, all with little doors, far from prying eyes.
One sunny summer morning, a flurry of excitement buzzed around the mighty oak. A new eco-fairy had arrived! Her name was Fizzy or ‘Fizz’ for short, the tiniest, sweetest little fairy with wings the colour of daisies.
Fizz peeked shyly through Elder Willow's beard, her eyes wide with wonder as she took in all the hustle and bustle, there were fairies buzzing about, singing and dancing, flying around with a radiance shining within them and spraying sparkling glitter trails from their wings.
She watched them doing loop de loops, fluttering around, singing to flowers, talking to rabbits, dancing in the woods and doing things both mundane and magical, enjoying a place full of music, dancing, playing and magic.
Elder Willow smiled, “Welcome Fizzy” he said in a friendly voice. “Today, you will learn the first and most important rule of being an eco-fairy ‘The woods must always be spick and span’.”
Fizz crept out from behind Elder Willow’s beard and said in a tiny, soft voice, “Hello my name is Fizzy but I like to be called Fizz.”
The little fairies were so excited to meet her they clambered all over each other, eager to be the first to say hello. First to reach Fizz was Pip, he is the tallest fairy, he shook her hand and in a hurried shrill voice said, “Welcome Fizz, to our wonderful wood, I'm sure you will love it here.”
Next up was Doreen, she likes to be the organiser of the whole wood, everyone and everything in it “Hello my dear, my name is Doreen we shall have to introduce you to everyone at some point,” and then she turned and fluttered away as quick as a flash.
Next came Angel, Angel is the loveliest fairy you’d ever want to meet. She’s lovely to everyone and in turn everyone loves Angel. Angel is such a lovely, happy fairy she often cannot help herself from breaking out in song and rhyme. Sometimes even when least expected.
“Hello, my lovely,” she said in a soft west country accent, as she threw her arms around Fizz and gave her a massive hug. Taking Fizz under her wing and led her out into the open space in front of the Oak.
