A few clouds began to spoil what would have been a beautiful clear blue sky early on a lovely summer morning. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves as the sun just peeked its head above the trees and shone down on a rare and special gathering.
A hush hung over the Whispering Wood, the eco-fairies home. The usual hubbub and controlled chaos had paused and the fairies were all huddled together quietly, looking and listening intently along with all the other wildlife of the wood.
What are they looking at and listening to you might wonder?
Well, an unusual sight had hushed them all and got them gawping.
Just over the way from the mighty Hollow Oak, their home, is a very important meeting at a very special place.
The eco-fairies secret stone circle was being used and a very special guest had arrived. Yes, the fairies have their own stone circle, The Whispering Stones. It has been there longer than even Elder Willow, their leader, can remember. It consists of a ring of 12 standing stones that are about 3 feet tall, massive to the fairies. The stones are equally spaced and align with the seasons of the sun. They look ancient and weather beaten and an amazing sight to behold, a magical place. They are used for ceremonies, important events and as a meeting place.
At today’s meeting is Elder Willow, the fairies leader, Taff, their Welsh Wizard friend, resplendent in one of his denim cloaks, denim shirt, jeans and denim pointy wizard hat, he’s a big fan of denim, leaning on his old staff.
What has got all the fairies hushed and staring is a very special guest, Shadow, the mightiest of all Unicorns, his coat shimmering in the early morning sun and looking truly magnificent.
Unicorns are ancient, easily as old as the very first trees and they live forever (as far as we know). They speak in an ancient language that few understand and only the older fairies have had the time to learn how to communicate with them. Elder Willow knows their language well as he has studied it in great detail as do wizards. The other fairies do not understand unicorns but luckily for them Elder Willow has a very magical item with him.
The three are in deep conversation and Elder Willow has with him the fairies magic crystal known as the Whispering Crystal. It is very sacred to the fairies and is used for anything considered important. A magical relic from the dawn of the fairies, it normally sits at the heart of Hollow Oak, their home, in a safe place. It holds many powers, one is confirming the truth is being said, which isn’t really needed at this meeting but Elder Willow is a stickler for traditions.
Another very useful power of the crystal is its ability to translate any language and project the translation directly into the mind of the listener. Something that is very handy when Unicorns are around. Hence why the fairies are so enthralled by proceedings. Unicorns are also the most magical of all the magical creatures.
They travel the globe spreading their magic to the world through rainbows but it is unsure where the rainbows come from. Some say they come out of their tails, which are rainbow coloured, although some of the younger fairies believe they fart them out. No one really knows but if you do see a rainbow you now know there's a Unicorn nearby. It is far less likely to see a pot of gold these days as Leprechauns are getting harder to find.
The meeting has been going on for ages as there is a lot to discuss. It is very rare for the fairies to be so silent and attentive for so long. Even Brian, the philosophical snail, has come along to witness the auspicious occasion, with his rainbow shell, cool shades and funky hat.
Out of the blue Brian announced “I’m glad I have got you all here today. Can I just say, Life is not a spectator sport”, he then launched into the air and zipped off in a cloud of magical golden glitter.
Buzzbee started to get a bit restless, all of a sudden he fluttered up into the air and headed towards the stone circle. At that moment the meeting appeared to come to an end, as Taff and Willow started to head back.
Buzzbee had other ideas, it is not normal or accepted that anyone can talk to a Unicorn but he ignored that protocol and went straight up to Shadow and whispered something in his ear.
It is believed that Unicorns do not understand common talk, Buzzbee must have learnt how to speak Unicorn because what happened next astonished all those gathered round. Before Willow could say anything Buzzbee fluttered up and sat on Shadow's back and to everyone’s amazement Shadow took off into the air.
Up he went with a glint from the sun reflecting off his magnificent coat and in a flash he disappeared into the high wispy clouds with Buzzbee hanging on for dear life. Moments later they reappeared above the trees, galloping at a tremendous speed. Going round and round, upside down, even backwards, with Buzzbee grinning his head off and shouting “Yee Haw” at the top of his voice.
The gathered fairies stood and stared in awe at his antics and as a final hoorah Shadow went around in a big circle and created a circular rainbow that no one had ever seen before. With that complete he landed softly back in the stone circle, Buzzbee fluttered off and said thank you. Shadow then took to the air once more and in the blink of an eye was gone.
He flew back to the other fairies but had no time to explain as Willow had fluttered onto a tree stump and had gathered everyone around him to discuss events.
“I am so glad I have you all here this morning, we will discuss Buzzbees’ fun later but we have far more important things to discuss first. I asked Taff and Shadow to the meeting, firstly to discover where all the rubbish is coming from that is blowing into our precious wood and also to get news on the Witches.”
The fairies looked troubled and glanced around at each other nervously at the mention of Witches.
Willow continued, “Shadow tells me that the rubbish that is blowing into our wood and disturbing the magic is coming from the local park that borders our wood. The humans don’t seem to care about nature anymore and simply throw their rubbish away without a thought about what damage it is doing. That rubbish is blowing into our lovely home, destroying nature and the magic it creates.”
Taff then spoke, “Sadly what Willow says is all too true but we have another more pressing problem, potentially as bad if not worse than the rubbish. Edna, the witch that I successfully got rid of the other day has returned and has brought some friends with her!”
This really troubled the fairies as the witches’ magic is quite strong and they love to cause trouble aimed at the fairies. Their magic is more than a match for any one fairy however, as a group they are still relatively safe. The witches have only recently arrived in The Whispering Wood. They have a very different outlook on life and do not like the way the fairies live and conduct themselves. This has caused conflict which the fairies are not used to.
Taff continued, “As Edna has come back, I am sure she is here to cause more trouble and get her revenge. She has got some friends with her so I have invited another one of my wizard friends to come and help us. I think you have all heard of my good friend Chuggy, he lives by the sea and spends most of his days surfing but he has agreed to tear himself away and come and help us. I'm not sure when he will turn up, it's usually just in the nick of time”.
Willow added, “We need to come up with a plan to deal with the rubbish but we also need to start gathering information on what the witches are up to. I think we should tackle the witches first then sort out the park after that. So our first step is to head out to where Edna likes to hang out, the dark, dank part of the Whispering wood, over that way” he waved his hand away over to the west, pointing to an area of the wood that looked darker even from this distance.
Doreen piped up, she likes to be involved in all things and organise everyone and everything “We should get a small expedition party together and go and spy on the witches, see what they are up to”.
“Great idea Doreen”, said Willow “who wants to join us?” Silence fell on the group but Taff spoke.
“I’m happy to come along and have a nose around.”
“Oh, Oh can I come please, I love adventures?” asked Buzzbee.
“And me please” said Fizzy, the smallest of all the fairies, who likes to be known as Fizz.
“I definitely want to be a part of proceedings” said Doreen, which was no surprise.
“OK I think definitely Taff, Buzzbee and Doreen but Fizz, as you had a nasty run in with Edna the other day, it’s probably best if you sit this one out, you can stay here and help plan our other problem, the park rubbish”
“OK” said Fizz, feeling a little despondent.
After a bit more discussion and planning the fairies began to formulate a plan to deal with Edna and her witchy friends. The first step was to find out how many witches they were dealing with and where they were located.
The gathering then got onto the small matter of Buzzbee riding a Unicorn.
The first question on everyone’s mind was how did Buzzbee talk to Shadow?
Buzzbee quickly sorted that out, “I have been reading one of Willow's books on Unicorn language and I have taught myself how to speak Unicorn, well some of it, it's very complicated. Shadow was very impressed that such a young fairy had gone to all that trouble and was more than happy to oblige my request”.
“So you learnt their language just to ride on the back of one?” asked Willow.
“Not exactly, I also felt it was important to be able to communicate with the most powerful of all magical creatures, you never know when it might come in handy, like getting a ride on one” Buzzbee said with a big smile.
“Well done for learning their language and for blagging a ride, I’m super impressed” said Willow.
“Right, we need to get started and send out our search party.” So Taff, Willow, Buzzbee and Doreen decided to head off straight away to see what they could find out. The other fairies were left to plan what should be done about the local park.
The four set off on their perilous mission and as they fluttered along Buzzbee tried to sing a song but he's not very good at it.
Off we go
To have a nose around
Into the wood
We are feeling good
We need to see
What will be
With the nasty people
That don't like me
We are fluttering away
We are fluttering away
We need to keep our place
Nice and safe
He should definitely stick to doing anything other than coming up with songs and he did borrow one of Willow's books on Unicorn language but he quickly discovered how complicated it is. Having tried to understand the language he got bored but had the good sense to use magic to help him learn what he needed to say.
