The Harvest Moon Hex

A Paranormal Cozy Mystery (The Pumpkin Spice Witch Series Book 2)

by KJ Rose

About This Book

The moon is full, the cider is hot, and someone is about to get hexed. Life in Hollows Creek is finally settling down for Lara. She has (mostly) mastered her powers, her Talking Cat Sleuth is keeping his sarcasm to a minimum, and things are heating up with the handsome local baker. But when the town’s legendary Harvest Festival is threatened by a dark family secret, the cozy autumn vibes turn deadly. As the town prepares for the big night, a mysterious illness sweeps through the villagers—and it looks suspiciously like a Curse and Magic Spells gone wrong. When her favorite neighbor becomes the prime suspect in a Fall Themed Murder Mystery, Lara must dust off her grimoire and dive back into the danger. But this time, the magic is stronger, and the shadows are longer. Can she break the Harvest Moon Hex before the final pumpkin is carved? Or will this Halloween Cozy Mystery end with her losing everything she has built? Perfect for readers who love: small-town witchy charm · snarky talking cats · slow-burn baker romance · harvest-festival whodunits · cozy stakes, guaranteed happy ending.

Chapter 1: The Quiet Before Mia Park ran her fingers along the spines of the mystery section, repositioning a misplaced Agatha Christie. Everything in its place. Everything orderly. The Hollow Creek Library was her sanctuary—a world of controlled silence and alphabetical perfection. Outside, volunteers hung garlands across the town square. Tomorrow was the Harvest Festival. Tomorrow meant crowds, noise, chaos. But today, the library was still hers. The bell above the door chimed. "Special delivery!" A man in brown coveralls wheeled in a wooden crate. "For the square. Can I leave it here? Festival coordinator's running late." Mia glanced at the label: Blackwood Orchards - Special Reserve Apple Cider. The wood smelled of autumn and something else. Something that made her skin prickle. "Fine. By the door." An hour later, Mrs. Patterson burst through the entrance, cheeks flushed with excitement. "Mia, dear! The cider came early. They're doing a tasting in the square!" Mia looked up from her cataloging. Mrs. Patterson was already heading back out, clutching a paper cup filled with amber liquid. "The apples this year—simply divine!" Mrs. Patterson took a long sip. The change was instant. Her head rippled like water, flesh turning orange and firm. Her eyes became glowing triangles. Her mouth stretched into a jagged, carved grin. A Jack-o'-Lantern where her head should be, candle-flame flickering inside. Mrs. Patterson's body went rigid. She turned mechanically and shuffled toward the square with jerky, puppet-like movements. Mia's book clattered to the floor. Screams erupted outside. Mia ran to the window. The town square was transforming into a nightmare. A dozen people—now twenty—stood with pumpkin heads, their carved faces all identical: wide triangle eyes, grotesque grins. They moved in unison, shuffling in a slow circle around the cider station. More townspeople lined up, oblivious or uncaring, taking cups from a volunteer whose head had already turned. "Stop!" someone yelled. "Don't drink it!" Too late. Three more transformations. Three more walking Jack-o'-Lanterns joining the bizarre parade. Mia's hands gripped the windowsill. She could feel it from here—the magic saturating the air. Purple sparks danced at the edges of her vision, invisible to everyone else. The energy signature was jagged, twisted, deliberately cruel. Her blood went cold. She knew this magic. Everyone in her family knew this magic. "Blackwood," she whispered. The most dangerous witch bloodline in three counties. And someone from that cursed family had just poisoned her entire town. Mia locked the library doors and grabbed her phone. Her hands shook as she scrolled through her contacts, past normal names, past regular people, until she found the one number she'd hoped never to call. Outside, the pumpkin-headed horde grew larger. She had twenty-four hours until the Harvest Festival officially began. Twenty-four hours before whatever this curse truly was would reach its full power. And she had absolutely no idea how to stop it.
