PROLOGUE
It is said that the purest love, the greatest giving
of oneself, is to give your life for someone you
love. To some, that noble love is worthy only of
one’s spouse or child, or a comrade in arms in the
glory of battle. Some would laugh at the thought
of holding a dog in such high esteem, but such are
some people’s lives that an animal holds the most
sacred place within the heart. Such was the state
of my life, in fact, when Angus came to me.
Mine had been a dead soul in a body that should
have died, but didn’t. The day I found Angus, or he
found me, to be more precise, was the day my soul
was resurrected from the ashes of my grief.
Finally, there was a reason for breathing, for
feeling. For living. Parting from that dog would
have caused unbearable sorrow, and to live
without the gentle soul that had restored my life
would have been just a slower way of dying again.
And so, it was with this belief firmly in mind that
I made the choice I did on that cold spring night.
It was April 14, 1912, and I, along with my
beloved dog, were passengers on the first, and
last, voyage of the Titanic.
